While leaders aren't self-selected, inherent charisma and decisiveness often help professionals land in roles where they are responsible for guiding others. There are many ways to position yourself as the go-to authority on a topic at work, but if your colleagues don’t perceive your approach to proving yourself to be a leader in a positive light, your efforts will fall flat.

When you are working in a field dominated by people who are more experienced than you, how can you showcase your own leadership traits without stepping on any toes?

Embrace Difficult Conversations

Be willing to have difficult conversations. Effective leaders understand that the best solutions arise from productive conflict. Don’t argue or show disrespectful behavior, but be willing to speak up if you have a different solution or a new idea. Lean in when you are challenged, get to the best solution, and commit to the collective decision, whether it's your solution or not! — Lisa Walsh, Beacon Executive Coaching, LLC
