Team Coaching

The challenges of the 21st century will demand that teams create value for stakeholders.

High-performing, value-creating teams are the competitive advantage of the future.

Teams create value through a shared purpose and healthy connections within the team and with its stakeholders within and outside the organization.

Beacon’s Team Coaching helps you build value-creating teams, realign unproductive teams, and support executive teams in leading organizational transformation.

Team learning and development is a journey, not a series of discrete events.

The team itself is a living entity that evolves (or not) based on changing internal and external environments.

Team coaching works with the team as a single entity. It is a way in which you and your team can focus on innovation and transformation, not just incremental improvement or firefighting.

Each team coaching engagement is unique; your goals and desired results are defined with you and your team and are revisited regularly throughout the team coaching process.

Beacon’s Team Coaching service may include both consulting and coaching depending upon the team’s needs.

Beacon’s Team Coaching engagements have included:

  • Informing investment decisions based upon an evaluation of the effectiveness of the leadership team;

  • Coaching an entrepreneur as she rebuilds a cohesive, trust-based senior team, after having to remove several senior leaders;

  • Coaching the founder of a rapidly growing start-up to help place senior leaders in the right seats, and to recruit and fill senior positions with people who make the collective leadership stronger;

  • Realigning an existing team that was working at cross-purposes to its members and stakeholders; and

  • Coalescing a new team whose shared purpose was to execute a newly developed strategic plan.

At Beacon, we serve the needs of the system => team members, the team, the wider organization, and its stakeholders.

We think and act systemically, coaching the connections between team members, teams, and stakeholders. The coaching process may involve offsite meetings, in-person team meetings onsite, live coaching during team meetings, and 1:1 coaching with team members.

We support the development and capabilities of the team until it can coach itself.

A range of team coaching activities.

Lisa Walsh, Founder of Beacon, offers a range of leadership team coaching activities, from group coaching of team members to transformational leadership team coaching, to systemic team coaching. The further one travels down the continuum of team development, the more inclusive the offering. The key is to understand the existing needs of the team and to meet the team where they are in their development. Coaching the connections within the team is far more complex than individual coaching; and as such the team coaching engagements may last from 6 months to one year or more. Lisa is a certified team coach and systemic team coach.

Inquiry and Scoping

The initial phase of a team coaching engagement focuses on inquiry and developing the proposed scope based on the results of that inquiry. The team coaching process begins once the leader or sponsor approves the scope of team coaching. In a systemic team coaching context, this inquiry includes both internal and external stakeholders, and exploration of what those stakeholders require from the team now and in the future (an “outside-in and future back” approach).

The team, once coalesced, is coached as a single entity. The coach works with the team together and apart, often in off-site settings, live in team meetings and one-on-one.

Execution and Learning

Once the team understands its commission as defined by its stakeholders, the team often begins by clarifying its collective purpose. This process generally includes defining: strategic priorities and initiatives; team KPIs; core values; vision for its success; and protocols for working together. The team also seeks to create value by engaging differently with all stakeholders.

The most effective leadership teams recognize that its efforts are constantly evolving and treat its charter as a living playbook. These teams capture their learning along the way, and often commit to infusing that learning culture throughout their organization.

Through team coaching, these teams realize and demonstrate that their collective results are far greater than the sum of their individual parts.

They have generative dialogue and are continually learning.

Their results are incredibly profound and transformative!
